SLU Official Statement on Academic Calendar Change

The Board of Trustees of Saint Louis University – Baguio City in its recent Board Meeting (22 March 2014) has approved to adopt the August-July academic calendar in all levels, including the Laboratory Elementary and High Schools, effective academic year 2014-2015, and has duly informed the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) of the said decision.

The decision came after careful consideration of existing laws, thorough reflection and study, series of meetings, and due consultations with internal stakeholders as well as external partners.

The shift to a new and synchronized academic calendar with the rest of the higher education institutions (HEIs) in the ASEAN region is an integral part of the general strategy to internationalize SLU’s programs, which is in keeping with the ASEAN Integration by 2015. Recently, SLU has been selected as one of the twelve HEIs in the Philippines to participate in the ASEAN International Mobility for Students (AIMS) Program this academic year 2014-2015. This gives SLU the welcome opportunity to engage in joint pilot projects with its foreign HEI partners to promote student mobility through regional exchange programs. This also means for SLU graduates the chance to work in other ASEAN countries as recognized professionals.

The SLU management is confident that with shared goodwill and common aspirations for quality education among all stakeholders, the move will provide more exciting opportunities for Louisian students and graduates to spend a part of their study time abroad, or continue their studies in another country, thereby enabling them to gain the needed international mindset. Likewise, faculty and researchers will become more globally competent to participate in conferences, exchange programs, and other opportunities that can enhance their professional expertise and skills.

Finally, in the face of irreversible global challenges, SLU will continue to respond and pursue its goal to bring its academic programs at par with international standards. It will carry on its task by remaining deeply rooted in its missionary character as a CICM university dedicated to the transformation of students into agents of social change towards building a better world.

Herewith are heartfelt thanks to everyone for all the continued trust and support.

Issued this 25th of March 2014.
